UBC Uncrewed Aircraft Systems - 2024-25 Recap!

Hello Everybody!

We are UBC Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), a multidisciplinary student design team from the University of British Columbia. Our team brings together members from a wide range of faculties, including mechanical, electrical, and software engineering as well as computer science.

This year, our team participated in the annual AEAC competition with our Cube Orange equipped to our aircraft, Hydrone. This competition tasked teams with detecting IR hotspots and accurately delivering water payloads to designated drop zones. The quality and stability of the Cube Orange helped us to secure a second-place overall finish, marking a significant achievement for our team.

We also attended the annual SUAS competition which brings together teams from across the world to design aircraft for long-range flight, autonomous object detection, and payload delivery. For this competition, our aircraft was subjected to intense heat, under which the Cube Orange performed as intended, leading to UAS achieving the highest Canadian placement of the competition.

This year, we again utilized the open source Ardupilot firmware with the Cube. We were able to automate essentially all of the tasks we required of the aircraft. Additionally we were able to program failsafe procedures to the Cube in case of a lost link, or any other failure to ensure safe operations. Working with CubePilot this year has once again been a fantastic experience. To control and operate our aircraft, we highly depend upon CubePilot’s Cube Orange and their Here4 GPS system. We are thankful for the support from the CubePilot team and we look forward to working more with their products in the future.
